Personal safety & conflict

For staff who work alone, visit people at home or deal with the public, and for the managers responsible for keeping them safe.

Why it matters

Employers have a legal duty to protect staff who work alone or face the public. Policies and alarms help, but what keeps people safe in the moment is knowing how to read a situation, calm it down and leave when they need to. I teach those skills in a way staff remember and use.

How it works

Start with a single session, or build it into every new starter's first weeks.
  1. Step 1

    Talk

60 minutes to 2 hours, any size of audience.

  2. Step 2

    One-day course

    Up to 15 staff.

  3. Step 3

    Managers' day

    For managers and supervisors.

  4. Step 4

    Induction and refresher programme

For new starters and existing staff.

Built into your induction

The organisations that get the most from this training make it part of how they bring people in. One council in Essex has had my personal safety course in its staff induction for more than ten years: every new starter attends a one-day session, and staff return for a refresher every two years. I run six or seven sessions a year for them, so the whole organisation shares the same approach to staying safe.

Every course is adapted before I arrive

Every organisation is different. The risks facing a housing officer entering someone's home are not those facing an estate agent at a viewing or a healthcare worker visiting a patient. So I take time to understand your organisation and the roles of the people attending, and we agree the learning outcomes together before the day.

01

Your roles

The day reflects the jobs of the people in the room.

02

Your risks

Scenarios come from situations your staff actually face.

03

Your policies

Your own lone working policy and reporting procedures are built in.
