About Farhan

Farhan Hayat speaking at a lectern

I've been delivering training for almost 20 years. I started in personal safety, as a Senior National Training Consultant for the Suzy Lamplugh Trust, the UK's national centre for personal safety. I trained people across the UK and Ireland in personal safety, lone working and conflict management: people who work alone, visit the public at home and deal with situations where behaviour can change quickly.

My career then moved into equality, diversity and inclusion. I spent 13 years in policing, including as an Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Manager: developing and delivering training, advising senior leaders, and working on anti-racism, microaggressions, cultural awareness and inclusive leadership. I led a police staff association for more than five years and worked nationally through the National Black Police Association. I organised the national Stephen Lawrence Day conference for three years and have hosted the National Black Police Association conference for the last two.

One principle runs through all of it: good training has to connect with people. I don't tell people what to think or hand them a list of policies to remember. I use conversation, realistic scenarios and practical strategies, so people can relate the subject to situations they recognise.

Training Sense is how I bring those two areas together. They are different subjects with one purpose: helping organisations create places where people feel safer, respected and supported.
